Meet Roshni

There’s a bigger purpose that lies behind our day-to-day at Black Kite Coffee.

Because of our faith, we want to practise some of the things that Jesus embodied, most notably, his love and concern for the marginalized. The upside-down values of God’s kingdom stand in stark contrast to the values we often hold - concern for money, status and power.

And so our grand experiment continues: is it possible to create a profitable business that blesses many others? We are certainly working towards that goal!

At the beginning of July, after an informal interview at the cafe, we decided to welcome Roshni to the Black Kite team! Roshni is now completing a month-long barista course at a nearby coffee school and, depending on how our business grows, will hopefully work with us part-time in the future.

Q: ‘Roshni, tell us a bit about your background..’

A: ‘I was born in rural Hatauda, south of the capital, Kathmandu. Our family was quite small by Nepali standards, with just my father, grandma and my little brother. Fifteen years ago, my dad had a serious accident that badly broke his thigh bones; he now relies on metal rods to walk. After the accident, no one could take care of us, so my brother and I were sent to a hostel in Pokhara to continue our studies.’

Q: ‘What is currently happening in your life?’

A: ‘Currently, I am living in Christian accommodation for young adults, next door to Ramghat Church in Pokhara, although I actually attend Nawa Jeevan (New Life) Assemblies of God church behind the new international airport. Right now, I am focusing on my studies and work. In my free time, I enjoy reading novels, singing, and listening to music.’

Q: ‘What are your dreams for the future?’

A: ‘My dream is to own my own business: a clothing store. First, I want to build a stable life for my brother and me - working as a barista will certainly help with that! After that, I hope to use my own business to help other people too!’

Glad you could join us Roshni - welcome to the team!

Next time… new machinery up and running?!
